Description

Activities
Three high priority activities will be performed by the PIS within the timeframe of this project: collection of a new seismic dataset (CO-led), construction of a new seismic catalog, and construction of a new shear velocity model for the LAS vegas basin. Led by the university of texas at dallas, a new catalog of seismicity will be built using new machine learning tools. The high levels of background noise that make seismic monitoring difficult in cities can be reduced by machine-learning algorithms trained to separate urban noise from seismic signals. Preliminary tests with data from LAS vegas suggest that deep denoising may reveal otherwise obscured earthquakes, particularly once a vegas-specific network is trained on elvis data. Led by UC riverside, ambient noise recorded by these instruments will be used to construct a new seismic velocity model for the region. Pre-existing, high-quality data in LAS vegas such as VS30 and gravity will help constrain the geometry of the near surface portion of the sedimentary basin. Such shear-wave velocity models are a necessary component of seismic hazard assessments for activities such as wavefield simulations.deliverables and expected outcomes: elvis, a publicly available seismic dataset for LAS vegas a denoising neural network specific to LAS vegas a new seismic catalog derived from the new dataset a seismic velocity model for the LAS vegas basin. A seismic catalog may reveal activity associated with faults marked as high priority for hazard studies by the USGS. A new seismic velocity model will constrain the basin geometry and provide a basis for future seismic hazard assessments.
Intended beneficiaries
This project will help assess seismic hazard in LAS vegas, an issue of clear public interest. The dataset and findings will also be made available to the broader scientific community.
