Description
- Activities
- In this project, the recipient will examine large strain effects in data collected by a DAS system, that is operated by USGS in arcata, CA to monitor seismicity. These existing data provide a rich set of earthquake events and other variable strength environmental sources for this investigation. In addition, in collaboration with USGS, we will also collect new experimental data in various high resolution mode settings, where we intentionally TRY to induce large strain events in close vicinity to the sensors. Modeling, predicting and analyzing those data will allow the recipient to develop methods for estimating magnitudes for large strain events on DAS systems. Analysis of these data sets will be compared with other auxiliary data that USGS has available.deliverables and expected outcomes: a comprehensive research report on the findings will be generated to guide future activities including potential instrumentation improvements.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Early warning providers, such as shake alert and others warning systems, will be primarybeneficiaries of the research results. Additionally, we will engage with CAL poly humboldt researchers and students in several aspects of the proposed research program. In the long-term municipalities in northern california near the gorda subduction zone will be beneficiaries of cost-effective reliable early warning systems.subrecipients activities: none
