The project runs through June 30, 2028, with performance at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The assistance type is a Project Grant. The program funds basic, clinical,...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Arizona State University $314,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to conduct secondary data analysis applying mediation mixture modeling and machine learning to identify heterogeneous risk pathways leading to youth substance use initiation. The project uses the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a national longitudinal dataset tracking youths' behavioral health, to examine...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Yale University $336,250 on April 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop a behavioral foundation model that transforms qualitative epidemiological survey responses into quantitative representations of substance use behaviors. The project harmonizes data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (NESARC-III), National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), and UK Biobank...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded the University of California, San Diego $879,000 on March 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and validate a novel episode-based paradigm for studying how family processes drive adolescent substance use. The project will collect real-time, real-world intensive longitudinal data on discrete parent and youth behaviors before and after episodes of substance use from 90 adolescents who use substances....
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded $121,500 to the University of Kansas Center For Research Inc. on December 1, 2025, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279). The research investigates contextual factors influencing cannabis use and behavioral economic demand in naturalistic environments. The project employs ecological momentary assessment and behavioral economic purchase tasks to extend laboratory-based research into real-world settings. The study will conduct...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded The Johns Hopkins University $686,170 under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) on June 15, 2026, to develop and evaluate the Better Together intervention, an eight-session, age-appropriate substance use prevention program for adolescents ages eleven to thirteen exposed to household challenges including parental substance use, parental incarceration, and parental mental health issues, and negative neighborhood contexts including...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Trustees of Boston University $193,751 on May 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to support a career development research initiative examining quality of care in outpatient substance use disorder treatment facilities. The award funds a five-year training and research plan designed to develop the principal investigator as an independent substance use disorder services researcher. The research uses a novel...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Arizona State University $730,989 on June 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and pilot-test a community-developed parenting intervention program designed to prevent substance use disorder among children with incarcerated parents. The funded work adapts evidence-based parenting program components to address the specific circumstances of caregivers raising children with incarcerated parents (CIP), a...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded the University of Vermont $387,291 on March 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to conduct longitudinal research delineating developmental windows of vulnerability for cannabis exposure and assessing causal relationships between cannabis use, neurodevelopment, and behavior. The award funds analysis of three large multimodal neuroimaging datasets spanning preadolescence to late adulthood: ABCD (11,880 participants,...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Auburn University $173,128 on November 29, 2025, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to support training and experimental research on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cannabis use disorder. The project, titled "Experimental Manipulation of the Emotional Salience of Cannabis Use-Related Information," will provide training in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) methodology, magnetic resonance imaging...
The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Baylor University $100,228 under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) on January 14, 2027, to improve the measurement and modeling of substance use expectancies and understand risk and protective factors in adolescent development of substance use involving alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, and e-cigarettes. Aim 1 identifies and corrects sources of measurement noninvariance in early social contexts, substance use expectancies, and adolescent substance use behaviors across age, prior experimentation, and demographic variables. Work includes deriving invariant factor scores for positive and negative expectancies across the four substances, and for early social contexts encompassing parental monitoring, family conflict, peer substance use, peer tolerance of use, and school environment, involvement, and disengagement. Aim 2 characterizes changes in substance use expectancies from late childhood through mid-adolescence by modeling average trajectories and empirically derived subgroups within the sample. The project employs established psychometric instruments selected by the ABCD Study team for demonstrated validity and reliability in adolescent populations, including the Parental Monitoring Questionnaire, Family Environment Scale, and PHENX School Risk and Protective Factors Survey. Performance occurs in Waco, Texas, with a period of performance from January 14, 2027, through January 13, 2030. This is a project grant, the standard assistance type for NIDA research support.
