Description

The shortnose sucker (chasmistes brevirostris) and the lost river sucker (deltistes luxatus) are endemic to southeastern oregon, and of central cultural significance to the federally recognized klamath, modoc and yahooskin tribes are nearing extinction. This project builds on a successfully innovative trial of rearing juvenile fish of these species on private lands which have been voluntarily returned to their native wetland state. Fish placed in this habitat appear to grow at rates twice that of their hatchery counterparts. This project aims to continue and scale up this work towards developing this method as a predictable and scalable tool for reversing extinction to restore these species.
