Description
However, the department recognizes the need for, and has a desire to explore, effectiveoptions that further reduce conflicts between wolves and livestock. Previous department-led research indicatedthat the strongest predictors of wolf depredation include proximity of cattle to or within pack ranges (i.e.,probability of area use by wolves) and wolf pack size (atkinson 2023). The department already leverages this empirical knowledge in management objectives for mitigating wolf conflict and wolf damages have been reduced and stabilized since endangered species act protections were removed in 2017. Nonlethal conflict prevention options such as nonlethal eartag deterrents, could provide an opportunity to further reduce wolf depredation of livestock and warrant further investigation.
