Description
Numerous federal and state agencies, tribes, non-profits, restoration contractors, and academic research institutions are involved in habitat restoration and fisheries monitoring activities along the klamath river in northern california and southern oregon. While the four dams were being removed in 2023-2024, regular calls facilitated by the national oceanic and atmospheric association (NOAA) proved useful for overall fisheries monitoring coordination efforts and information sharing among the numerous entities engaged. The river was rapidly changing and the calls helped entities coordinate among one another to ensure data gaps were addressed and share notable river or fish migration conditions that could be expected at respective monitoring projects. Participants expressed a need for continuation of these coordination efforts as restoration activities proceed post-DAM removal and the river continues to change as IT settles in to a post-DAM state. While there are opportunities for information sharing at post-season meetings, there is currently no sustained effort for regular coordination leading up to and during the fisheries season. Hosting and facilitating regular calls is an easy step to improving communication and coordination to ensure the recovery of endangered species act listed species and their habitat and reduce regulatory burden associated with the ongoing degradation of the species. This project would support continued fisheries coordination that includes: facilitating regular calls among the entities, collating fisheries monitoring and habitat restoration information to share with participants on a regular basis, and developing a long-term and accessible framework for data sharing.
