About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Latin America Regional Program awarded a $365,344 Project Grant to the Zoological Society of San Diego, doing business as San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA), to reduce human-jaguar conflicts and promote coexistence in the Peruvian Amazon. The key objectives are to strengthen the capacity of government agencies to manage human-jaguar interactions, reduce livestock losses, and foster coexistence. The project will develop and deliver comprehensive training on human-jaguar conflict management, implement mitigation programs in rural communities, and produce educational materials on jaguar ecology and depredation prevention. This two-year project aims to ultimately benefit both jaguar populations and local communities in the Peruvian Amazon through a multifaceted approach to mitigate conflicts and promote tolerance. The grant award period runs from December 1, 2024 to November 30, 2026.
Description
This impacts both jaguar conservation efforts and local communities. The amazon is a critical habitat for jaguars but increasingly habitat loss and illegal killings are major threats to the survival of the species. Deforestation driven by agriculture and logging and mining has reduced forest cover which brings jaguars in close contact with people. Jaguars are often killed in retaliation for livestock predation or out of fear which underscores the need for conflict mitigation strategies. The zoological society of SAN diego doing business as SAN diego ZOO wildlife alliance (sdzwa) has been engaged in jaguar research and conservation in peru for over 15 years developing monitoring strategies and showing the critical role of logging concessions in their protection. Recent large scale interviews conducted by sdzwa revealed substantial human jaguar conflicts and a significant lack of community awareness regarding conflict management and reporting mechanisms. This project aims to reduce jaguar killings and mitigate negative impacts on communities through a multifaceted approach. Key objectives include strengthening the capacities of government agencies to manage human jaguar interactions and respond to conflicts and reducing livestock losses and fostering coexistence. A comprehensive training course on human jaguar conflict management will be developed and taught in loreto and madre DE dios and targets wildlife professionals and stakeholders covering topics such as conflict assessment and legal and governance and ecological and social aspects related to interventions and response team formation and capture and translocation processes and intervention evaluation. In rural communities the project will implement mitigation programs through workshops and household visits and capacity building sessions. These will focus on solutions like improved enclosures and deterrents. Additionally animal health and husbandry programs will improve livestock health and reduce loss due to disease. The project will also produce and distribute educational materials with information on jaguar ecology and strategies for depredation mitigation and information on how to report depredation events to authorities. This comprehensive approach aims to reduce human jaguar conflicts and promote tolerance and develop scalable strategies for broader conservation efforts in the peruvian amazon ultimately benefiting both jaguar populations and local communities.
