The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $234,290 Project Grant under the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.623) to the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve Inc., a non-profit organization. The grant, which runs from July 2024 to July 2026, will fund the conservation of 320 acres of wetlands and associated uplands in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This includes the retention of 20 acres of palustrine emergent wetlands, 115 acres of palustrine forested wetlands, 100 acres of palustrine shrub-scrub wetlands, and 85 acres of upland hardwood-conifer mix, as well as the restoration of 14 acres. The project aims to support wildlife such as migratory birds, moose, grey wolves, and spruce grouse, while also providing cold-water recharge for the Yellow Dog River watershed and carbon sequestration benefits.
