Description

I. Statement of workthe shasta river watershed coordinator is a staff position for the shasta valley resource conservation district (svrcd), providing technical and financial support to private landowners in the shasta valley. This work includes examining and understanding the local factors that might be responsible for declines in anadromous fish, and finding effective ways to reverse those declines. Staff wages will be the only spending category other than 10% for indirect expenses, sometimes called overhead or administration. In the shasta valley, local landowners have been working on a variety of approaches to improve survival of salmon and steelhead in the shasta river for more than three decades. The watershed coordination work allows for the continuation of this important work. Forward planning work as well allows the svrcd to push toward collaborative solutions for specific obstacles and to proceed to finding funding, designing projects and construction.svrcd s work has focused on riparian stream corridor enhancements, monitoring and improvement of water quality, improving fish passage, and in recent years drought cooperative planning and coordination for landowners. This proposal will be consistent with ongoing emphasis on future project planning to address land and water management impacts on fish habitat, water quantity and quality. This project will benefit the public at large including our local tribes, by facilitating participation of svrcd staff with federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and others in restoration planning and coordination efforts in the shasta river basin. These critical tasks are not always tied to a specific project and can be challenging to find discreet funds for use by our special district. Water quality monitoring is beneficial to all our clients, partners and collaborators to measure and assess conditions in the field and in the river, especially during our ongoing drought. We are exploring strategic assessment and analysis tools with partners to respond to evolving natural resources challenges.a. Tasks:general tasks: 1. Coordination: participate in local and basin-wide planning efforts aimed at improving water quality and fish survival, by attending regional meetings, identifying restoration, monitoring and study needs. Coordinate with other individuals, agencies, tribes and other organizations working on salmonid fishery-related efforts in the klamath basin.2. Outreach: provide information to private landowners, public groups and others about fishery restoration issues. Monitoring of water quality at our long term trend monitoring sites throughout the watershed. Implement restoration outreach efforts through the updates to our website, production of newsletter(s), informational materials and or press releases to inform the community about resource issues and restoration in the shasta river watershed and the work of the svrcd.3. Administrative: provide organizational support for svrcds district manager to prepare for and attend svrcds board of directors monthly meetings, and to research and prepare grant proposals that benefit the fisheries, water quality and water resources in the shasta river watershed. .4. Reporting as required.
