The project will utilize Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS) cameras to...
This federal Project Grant award of $449,324 from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation under the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (CFDA 15.517) program will fund a 4-year study by the Karuk Tribe of California to monitor juvenile salmonid survival and migration rates in the Klamath River basin. The project will use acoustic tags to track wild and hatchery-raised Chinook salmon in the Scott, Salmon, Trinity, and Klamath Rivers, and install an array of 32 acoustic receivers...
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the Fish and Aquatic Conservation - Aquatic Invasive Species (CFDA 15.608) federal grant program, awarded a $117,153.94 Project Grant to the Yurok Tribe for the "Assessment of Anadromous Salmonid Stocks in Blue Creek on the Lower Klamath River." This 1-year project, running from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, involves conducting weekly and bi-weekly spawning ground surveys to collect data on live fish, redds, and carcasses in Blue...
This $386,776 Formula Grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605) will fund two key components for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to estimate spawning escapement and juvenile distribution of anadromous salmonid species in the Smith River basin. The first component is operating a sonar unit to enumerate migrating fish upstream, with auxiliary sampling to partition the counts by species....
The University of California, Davis will analyze 281 otoliths collected from Battle Creek from 2001 to 2020 under a $119,628 cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8. The analysis will determine habitat use and migratory patterns of Battle Creek spring-run Chinook salmon to leverage similar datasets from other Central Valley tributaries. This will synthesize how ESA-listed spring-run Chinook salmon populations in the Central Valley use...
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) was awarded a $260,363 Formula Grant under the U.S. Department of the Interior's Sport Fish Restoration Program (CFDA 15.605) to conduct fisheries assessment and management activities in the Smith River basin in California. The key products and services to be delivered under this one-year grant include: Operating a sonar unit to enumerate anadromous salmonid spawning escapement in the Smith River, with auxiliary sampling to partition the...
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) was awarded a $1.6 million cooperative agreement by the Bureau of Reclamation under the San Joaquin River Restoration Program to operate a salmon conservation and research facility from June 2023 through December 2024. Key activities include operating a sonar fish counting...

THE MIDDLE KLAMATH FALL-RUN CHINOOK SPAWNER ESCAPEMENT AND REDD SURVEY IS A COOPERATIVE EFFORT BY THE US FOREST SERVICE (USFS) KLAMATH AND SIX RIVERS NATIONAL FORESTS, SALMON RIVER RESTORATION COUNCIL (SRRC), QUARTZ VALLEY INDIAN RESERVATION, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA RESOURCE CENTER, MID KLAMATH WATERSHED COUNCIL, SISKIYOU RESOURCE CONSERVATION DISTRICT, KARUK AND YUROK TRIBES, AND CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE (CDFW). CDFW HAS BEEN TASKED WITH DETERMINING CHINOOK SPAWNER ESCAPEMENT IN THE KLAMATH RIVER UPSTREAM OF WEITCHPEC SINCE 1978. THE DATA GENERATED BY CDFW HAVE BEEN, AND CONTINUE TO BE, A KEY COMPONENT IN THE MANAGEMENT AND DETERMINATION OF HARVEST LEVELS FOR KLAMATH RIVER CHINOOK SALMON STOCKS. CDFW USES A COMBINATION OF COUNTING WEIRS, SPAWNER CARCASS SURVEYS, REDD SURVEYS, AND HATCHERY RETURNS TO DEVELOP THESE ESTIMATES. THIS ONE-YEAR STUDY WILL DETERMINE IN-RIVER RUN SIZE OF CHINOOK SALMON WITHIN THE SHASTA, SCOTT, AND SALMON RIVER BASINS AND OTHER MAJOR TRIBUTARIES TO THE MIDDLE KLAMATH RIVER DURING THE 2024 FALL SEASON (OCTOBER THROUGH DECEMBER) WITH COOPERATORS HOLDING PLANNING MEETINGS STARTING IN JULY OR AUGUST BEFORE THE SURVEY SEASON.
