Description
The friends of loxahatchee is working closely with the staff of the arthur R. Marshall loxahatchee national wildlife refuge to develop standards-based environmental education curriculum for school field trips. To accomplish this, the friends will hire up to three certified teachers to write the curriculum and lesson plans over the summer. Our goal is to have 8-10 curriculum packets, aligned with specific grade levels that will include lessons and instructions for field trips lead by a ranger or teacher and instructions for on-site as well as off-site field trips. The teachers hired through the friends of loxahatchee will be required to spend 8 hours on-site at the refuge for each curriculum packet. They will be required to meet weekly with the supervisory park ranger to ensure project development is successful. Completed curriculum packets for 8-10 different grade levels will include 6 components each:curriculum and instructions for one grade level vesting the arthur R. Marshall loxahatchee NWR for a field trip lead by the teachercurriculum and instructions for the same grade level and topic visiting the arthur R. Marshall loxahatchee NWR for a field trip lead by a park ranger curriculum and instructions for the same grade level and topic but the ranger will lead this program off-site like in a city park.list of suppliessupplementary pre-lessonsupplementary post-lessonthis project will serve many nearby communities surrounding the refuge and we will focus on traditionally under resourced schools (title I) as well as other schools from palm beach county that request field trips. The impact of this project is estimated to be large. By offering expertly written curriculum with instructions for different leaders and off-site field trips, the possibilities for educational experiences are huge. We will publish the completed environmental education curriculum packets via our website, so they can be used by the public to reach a wider audience with these free resources. Total reach is estimated to be 5000 students per year.
