About this program

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) funds fish and wildlife coordination and assistance activities under Assistance Listing 15.664, with the most recent grant award disbursed on March 2, 2026.

This program serves as a catch-all mechanism for the Service to issue financial assistance for activities that do not fit existing standalone assistance listings. It funds congressionally directed projects, unsolicited proposals, and ad hoc initiatives across conservation disciplines. Funded activities include fish hatchery operations and maintenance (fin clipping and tagging of salmon and steelhead; tank cleaning and fish health monitoring); habitat restoration (riparian corridor establishment, invasive species removal, wetland grading and tidal restoration, stream channel restoration with wood structures and beaver dam analogues); fisheries research and monitoring (population genetics analysis, subsistence harvest documentation, fish passage monitoring); species recovery work (cryopreservation protocols for endangered Delta Smelt, Prebles meadow jumping mouse population modeling, bat surveys and roost monitoring); training and capacity building (HAZWOPER training for spill response, conservation leadership programs for Native youth); and infrastructure development (water management database tools, GIS geodatabases for adaptive management). Recent awards also funded conference logistics, environmental education curriculum development, and contributions to intergovernmental conservation councils.

The portfolio is predominantly Cooperative Agreements (59% of 446 awards) with a substantial Project Grant share (41%). Among USFWS regional offices and headquarters, the Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 leads by federal dollars obligated at $30.6 million across 74 awards, followed by Region 4 at $24.1 million and Region 5 at $18.2 million. These five top funders account for 84% of the $120.9 million in combined federal obligations. Combined total obligated (federal plus non-federal) reached $133.2 million, indicating modest cost-sharing by recipients.

Recent activity shows consistent award disbursement: 41 awards in 2022, 39 in 2023, 44 in 2024, declining to 25 in 2025, and only 3 through March 2026. Representative recent awards include a $5.3 million Cooperative Agreement for Puerto Rican Parrot aviary and site infrastructure repairs; a $2.8 million Cooperative Agreement for fish passage improvement at Numana Dam in Nevada with the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe; and a $2 million Project Grant for climate-resilient tidal habitat restoration and public access at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Smaller awards funded individual research projects (genetic studies on chum salmon, crayfish drift behavior, delta smelt hybridization) and community engagement initiatives (Native youth leadership development, shorebird outreach).

The source documents no open grant opportunities as of the summary date. The most recently posted opportunities are from 2022 and earlier, indicating no current solicitations are actively accepting applications under this listing.
