Description

TIC is an environmental education program in which students in grades 4 through 12 raise rainbow trout from eggs to FRY, monitor tank water quality, engage in stream habitat study, learn to appreciate water resources, begin to foster a conservation ethic, and grow to understand ecosystems. Students of all ages have a chance to raise trout in the classroom setting. During the eight months that classes spend raising trout, they closely monitor water temperature, water clarity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia levels, and PH. Because trout are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment, students learn the importance of clean water and environmental protection. TIC brings nature into the classroom and allows students to develop a personal interest and a sense of the conversation ethics that are at the core of trout unlimited s mission. The recipient will continue to use the processes in place to choose schools to participate in the program. Funds from this grant will help the recipient to purchase supplies needed to raise trout at a school location. Supplies needed include an aquarium, filter, chiller, pump, air stone, EGG basket, thermometer, aquarium hood, aquarium stand and other miscellaneous accessories and supplies. Local trout unlimited volunteers secure eggs from the arizona game and fish department, food for the fish, help set up and maintain equipment, provide guest speakers in the classes about all sorts of topics, and help organize outdoor fishing opportunities (if possible). IT is anticipated funds will help bring TIC to three additional classrooms in arizona in the upcoming school year.
