About this award
The Sweet Marsh Wetland Enhancement Project, funded through the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.623) administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, will deliver habitat enhancement services across 158 acres of wetland in the Upper Wapsipinicon Floodplain in northeastern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will implement water management system improvements designed to replicate natural flooding cycles disrupted by anthropogenic changes and past catastrophic flood events. The $244,000 project, awarded on July 1, 2025, with completion targeted for June 30, 2028, will enhance wetland quality to support migratory waterfowl, waterbirds, passerines, and other wetland-dependent species utilizing the Central Mississippi Flyway and Prairie Pothole Region migration corridors.
The project aligns with conservation priorities established by the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture and addresses the program's core objective of protecting and restoring wetland ecosystems critical to migratory bird populations. By restoring natural hydrology through targeted water control infrastructure improvements, the enhancement initiative will increase wetland productivity and ecosystem functionality while supporting long-term habitat conservation in a strategically important region of the Upper Mississippi River ecosystem.
Description
The project area is in the upper mississippi river and great lakes region joint venture region. The purpose of the project is to enhance the quality of 158 acres of wetland habitat vital to migrating waterfowl, waterbirds, and passerines as they journey between major staging areas in the central mississippi flyway and eastern portions of the prairie pothole region as well as other wetland-dependent species in the area. The department of natural resources (IDNR) will complete this wetland enhancement project. This project focuses on enhancing the water management system to replicate natural flooding cycles which have been disrupted by anthropogenic changes to the floodplain and catastrophic flood events in the past. This proposal is consistent with the priorities identified in the conservation strategies developed by the upper mississippi and great lakes joint venture.
