About this award
This federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.623) provides $2,340,000 to The Nature Conservancy of Canada to secure, enhance, and manage wetland and associated upland habitats across six Canadian provinces. The project aims to protect at least 180 wetland acres and 615 acres of upland habitat, enhance 312 acres, and steward 240 acres to benefit migratory birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife species. Key activities include land acquisition, habitat restoration, and long-term management practices. This 3-year grant, with an end date of December 31, 2026, supports the organization's conservation efforts aligned with the goals of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture.
Description
The project targets priority wetland and associated upland habitat in the canadian provinces of ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island and newfoundland and labrador, across the eastern habitat joint venture. Securing at least one hundred and eighty wetland acres and six hundred and fifteen acres of associated upland habitat, enhancing three hundred and twelve acres, managing over seventy-two thousand acres, and stewarding two hundred and forty acres across eastern habitat joint venture priority areas will prevent wetland loss, restore wetland habitat, conserve associated upland habitat, and ensure the protection of wintering, molting, breeding and staging areas for hundreds of bird species. Twenty-one waterfowl species, including all six priority joint venture waterfowl species, will directly benefit from this project as well as sixteen priority non-waterfowl bird species identified in the eastern habitat joint venture implementation plan. Activities will benefit at least eighteen coastal and wetland-dependent plant and animal species at risk. Stewardship and communication activities encourage long-term management practices compatible with conservation. Projects also provide recreation opportunities and foster the next generation of conservation supporters. Conserved habitat provides essential ecosystem services such as coastal stabilization and flood mitigation.
