Project Grant F22AP02095
- Grant Award Summary The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Region 8, awarded a cooperative agreement of $252,619.05 to The Great Basin Institute (effective January 1–September 30, 2026) under the Candidate Species Conservation program (CFDA 15.660). In partnership with USFWS, the Institute will hire a Native Plant Materials Lead to advance restoration activities on public lands throughout Nevada and the Great Basin ecoregion. The position will support implementation of the National and...
- This $124,665 three-year Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657) aims to restore the endangered Behrens and Myrtles Silverspot butterflies on the Sonoma-Mendocino coast by expanding the coverage of their larval host plant, Viola adunca, in Fort Ross State Historic Park. The project will test the effectiveness of two restoration methods - seed dispersal and planting mature...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) provides $487,639 to the University of California, Berkeley to conduct long-term monitoring and research on plant community dynamics in the Colorado alpine biome. The project aims to assemble a unique long-term dataset on population and community changes in response to rapid environmental changes, such as climate change, to advance ecological theory and forecasting. Key activities...
- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $442,094 Project Grant through the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615) to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to advance the conservation and recovery of six rare plant species found on the northern Channel Islands off the coast of California. The project, led by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (SBBG) and its collaborators, will implement critical surveys, seed collections, seed increase, and...
- The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $442,709 Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615) Project Grant to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to support research on the Burke's goldfields (Lasthenia burkei) and Contra Costa goldfields (Lasthenia conjugens) plant species. The 3-year project, which began on February 1, 2024, aims to: (1) evaluate seed production, quality, viability, and dormancy rates; (2) assess seed...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Park Service's Conservation, Protection, Outreach, and Education program (CFDA 15.954) provides $626,384 to the Center for Plant Conservation, Inc. to support rare plant species conservation efforts in the Intermountain West region. The project aims to assemble ex situ plant collections from wild populations, creating seed and gene banks as well as botanical garden living collections. These off-site conservation efforts are intended to support...
- This $733,965 cooperative agreement, awarded by the Bureau of Land Management under the Plant Conservation and Restoration Management program (CFDA 15.245), supports the University of Nevada, Reno in developing genetically appropriate native plant materials, implementing and assessing seed-based restoration techniques, and inventorying/monitoring rare plant species and their associated communities. The 5-year project aims to restore habitats, conserve biodiversity, and engage underserved...
- This $442,310 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Environmental Biology supports a 5-year field research study on the Scarlet Monkeyflower (Mimulus cardinalis), a plant species found across varied climates in western North America. The research aims to understand how different climates influence the survival, growth, and reproduction of this plant species, and how this affects population persistence in the face of climate change. The study involves...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Park Service (NPS) under the federal Natural Resource Stewardship program (CFDA 15.944) provides $351,588.23 in funding to the Laguna De Santa Rosa Foundation for ex-situ research and seed production to increase the availability of source-identified native seeds and container plants for post-fire restoration efforts on Department of the Interior (DOI) lands. The key activities under this award include developing a 2-acre field for specialized...
- This $455,000 cooperative agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey will support the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in its efforts to examine and repopulate endangered plant species impacted by border wall construction in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Over four years, the university will conduct field surveys; collect seeds; establish a plant nursery; grow thousands of endangered plants from seed; transplant newly grown plants into suitable habitats; monitor transplantation...
SUMMARY: THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES GOLDEN PAINTBRUSH RECOVERY BY PROTECTING/MAINTAINING EXISTING POPULATIONS THROUGH HYBRID REMOVAL, EXPANDING EXISTING AND NEW POPULATIONS, SEED PRODUCTION TO ALLOW FOR CURRENT AUGMENTATION AND FUTURE EXPANSION, AND MONITORING OF POPULATIONSOBJECTIVES: 1. EXPAND AND SUPPORT EXISTING SEED PRODUCTION OF GOLDEN PAINTBRUSH TO ENABLE LARGE SCALE SEEDINGS.2. MAINTAIN EXISTING GOLDEN PAINTBRUSH POPULATIONS BY REMOVING HYBRID THREATS.3. EXPAND EXISTING POPULATIONS OF GOLDEN PAINTBRUSH AND ESTABLISH NEW POPULATIONS. TASKS: ADD 6000 SQUARE FEET BED WITH THE REQUIRED LABOR-INTENSIVE WEEDING NEEDED FOR GROWING CASTILLEJA SPECIES AT SATELLITE FACILITY TO PREVENT HYBRIDIZATION POTENTIAL. PRODUCTION WILL BE EXPANDED IN 2022 AND NURTURED IN 2023 AS PLANTS ESTABLISH. USE SEED PRODUCED TO AUGMENT AND EXPAND MANAGED SITESMAINTENANCE ON THE EXISTING TWO BEDS (9500 SQUARE FEET TOTAL) THAT IS REGULARLY WEEDED AND MANAGED, ALLOWING FOR MAXIMUM PRODUCTION. MANUAL REMOVAL OF HYBRIDS WILL BE CONDUCTED EACH SUMMER DURING FLOWERING. SITES WILL BE SWEPT SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE GROWING SEASON TO HAND REMOVE POTENTIAL HYBRIDS. SEEDING WILL BE CONDUCTED IN THE FALL AFTER PRESCRIBED BURNING.
