Description

The strategies and actions laid out in this proposal demonstrate how the colombian pacificregional protected areas system (SIRAP), will expand strategic alliances within its members toincrease protection for shorebirds and their habitats and therefore advance the objectives andgoals of the pacific americas shorebird conservation strategy. Conservation and monitoring atkey sites will be cultivated and increased. Partners will be assisted in rebuilding their capacityand understanding of the ecological relationships within coastal ecosystems, and localcommunities will reap the benefits of protecting ecosystem services. This proposal willcontribute to a regional scope perspective, increase the awareness of the value of shorebirdconservation through monitoring, improve the local capacity and knowledge to participate inlocal decision-making. This type of partnership and coordinated regional efforts areindispensable in a post-pandemic scenario, because many local communities are now highly vulnerable due to their geographic isolation and lack of government assistance. To continueprogressing our knowledge and evaluation of shorebird populations' conservation status, wewill implement a participatory monitoring system that engages the communities and localauthorities. The data gained from this monitoring will form the benchmark for evaluating theeffectiveness of management and development plans. The data will enable the partnership tomake informed decisions in the planning and management of their territories, which are beingimplemented in the framework of the SIRAP. During the development of this project, government agencies, community groups, and other stakeholders will work together for theconservation of shorebird habitats, which provide ecosystem services to humans and otherwildlife. The project will benefit local communities, while also achieving the conservation ofshorebirds, many that breed in the USA, across the entire pacific americas flyway.
