Description
The project will remove impediments to fish passage on the monatiquot river in braintree.statement of need: the ames pond DAM removal project is necessary because the DAM is an impediment to anadromous fish passage on the monatiquot river in braintree. Each spring river herring are visually observed at the downstream project limit, but the DAM prevents them from accessing the primary spawning habitat at the great pond reservoir. By taking no action, diadromous fish and other aquatic species will continue to be impacted by the DAM. The ames pond DAM removal is part of an overall effort to restore the monatiquot river for migratory fish passage and climate resiliency.purpose: the ames DAM removal project aims to increase river herring (alosa pseudoharengus & alosa aestivalis), american EEL (anguilla rostrata), and sea lamprey (petromyzon marinus) populations in the weymouth-fore river and monatiquot river watersheds.objectives: the primary project objective is to implement the removal of the ames pond DAM and foster diadromous fish recovery in the monatiquot/fore river system. The project will include DAM demolition and bank stabilization. The DAM no longer impounds water but IT serves as an impediment to diadromous fish.methods/approach: the ames pond DAM removal project has been in development since the mid-2000S. Project designs and specifications have been prepared by SLR consulting (formerly milone & macbroom, INC.), a top DAM removal consulting firm in the region. Final designs are complete and most permits required for the project have been secured. The objectives of the project will be achieved through the removal of the full removal of the remaining concrete DAM. Deliverables to be provided include: - photographic site documentation before and after DAM removal. - as-built / record plans demonstrating DAM removal and final site conditions.timetable or milestones: a construction bid ready package will be available in august 2022. The town anticipates putting the ames pond DAM removal out to bid concurrently with the armstrong DAM and beginning construction in november, 2022. Most project permits are currently in hand and any remaining permits will be secured by august, 2022.expected results, benefits, outcomes: removal of ames DAM, along with the removal of armstrong DAM, this project will open 36 miles and 180 acres for anadromous fish, giving full aquatic organism passage.project location:the project is on the monatiquot river, the primary tributary to the weymouth fore river. This site is located northeast of the intersection hancock street and plain street in braintree, MA. The property is privately owned by hollingworth pond, LLC. The town and the landowner have established a conservation easement the includes the entire project corridor.
