Description

Garamba national park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in the democratic republic of the congo (approximately 1,310 individuals). These elephants are also genetically unique, constituting one of the few confirmed hybrid forest-savanna elephant zones on the african continent. This project is intended to conserve african forest, savanna, and forest-savanna hybrid elephants and their habitat by addressing the impacts of poaching and supporting evidence-based decision making by conservation managers. Specific activities include: (1) deploying and maintaining elephant satellite global positioning system (GPS) collars; (2) analyzing GPS collar data and biennial aerial survey data to inform park-wide operations; (3) establishing a biodiversity observatory to support research efforts and develop national research talent; and (4) developing a research pairing program with national and international graduate students.
