The Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service awarded a $636,719 Project Grant under the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program to Hope For Small Farm Sustainability. The grant will support the establishment of a regional food system connecting nonprofit organizations and small-scale farmers and ranchers across Texas through transportation and wholesale purchase coordination between food hubs. Specifically, the awardee will create a logistics, storage, and transportation system to safely transport locally produced agricultural products from the Rio Grande Valley, Central Texas, the Upper Gulf Coast region, and North Texas to hub locations in Harlingen, Houston, and the Dallas Farmers Market for wholesale distribution to nonprofit community food suppliers and other wholesale buyers. Technical assistance for small producers will also be provided around wholesale sales training, product tracing practices, safe handling, labeling, packing, and transporting of goods. An online sales portal is planned to further facilitate wholesale marketing and sales. The three-year project period extends from September 30, 2022 to September 30, 2025.
