MENTASTA TRADITIONAL COUNCIL IS SEEKING FUNDING TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING HYDROPOWER UPON ITS TRIBAL LAND. THE VILLAGE HAS AN ENERGY PRICE WHICH IS 3X THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. THIS CAUSES FINANCIAL STRAIN TO THE VILLAGERS. AS THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF FLOWING WATER NEAR THE TRIBE, THE VILLAGE WOULD LIKE TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER AN ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCE CAN HELP TO REDUCE ENERGY COSTS. WITH THIS GRANT, THE NEARBY FISH CREEK WILL BE INVESTIGATED, WATER FLOW MEASUREMENTS WILL TAKE PLACE, AND BUSINESS ANALYSIS WILL BE DONE TO DETERMINE WHETHER A PROJECT COULD BE BUILT IN A WAY THAT IS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND AFFORDABLE FOR THE TRIBE IN THE LONG TERM.
