Description

Implementing cost-effective total nitrogen removal using biological intensification is a project led by the vallejo flood and wastewater district (vfwd) to implement an innovative biological intensification process to achieve primary effluent nitrification/denitrification and reduce nitrogen discharge from vallejo flood and wastewater district's wastewater treatment plant effluent. The proposed intensification process offers reliable, high-rate nitrogen removal within a small footprint and with a rapid startup time. Once implemented, the process is anticipated to reduce vfwd's nitrogen discharge by 180 pounds (LBS.) per day, or more than 65,000 LBS. Per year, showcasing a novel intensification technology for region-wide implementation, and demonstrating an advanced, sustainable solution for nitrogen removal that costs a fraction of the expenditures required to implement conventional solutions. Finally, the project includes engagement with underserved communities within vallejo for workforce development and both regional and national outreach programs, including site visits, tours, meetings, and publications. This assistance agreement provides full federal funding in the amount of $3,000,000. Pre-award costs have been approved back to 08/01/2023. Activities:to implement the SAN francisco estuary partnership comprehensive conservation and management plan (ccmp), vallejo flood and wastewater district will carry out a multi-objective effort involving new technology implementation, process monitoring, and public engagement.subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:anticipated deliverables are grouped by the three major tasks of the project. Task a delivers implementation of the microvi MNE technology as a partial-scale nitrification / denitrification process including fabrication, installation, start up and commissioning to remove nitrogen from vwfd effluent. Task b will conduct performance evaluation of the microvi MNE technology, including quantification of actual nutrient load reductions and comparative analysis. Lastly, task c will promote workforce development by hiring two (2) interns from the district's service area to engage in training and operational activities on the system. Conduct broader outreach activities regionally and nationally through webinars, conference presentations and publications. Engage project stakeholders for site tours and projects updates. The intended beneficiaries of the project are the residents in the vallejo flood and wastewater district service area and the living resources of SAN francisco BAY and its watersheds.
