This $1,500,000 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 9 under the Geographic Programs - San Francisco Bay Water Quality Improvement Fund (CFDA 66.126) supports the City of Berkeley in implementing water quality improvement measures for the Aquatic Park Lagoon. The key activities include:
Designing and constructing a bio-retention garden upstream of the lagoon to reduce contaminants and trash entering the water body. Additionally, the project will install two trash separators on Bancroft and Channing Ways to further filter out pollutants before they reach the lagoon, which ultimately flows into the San Francisco Bay. The anticipated outcomes are reduced trash and contaminants entering the Aquatic Park Lagoon and the San Francisco Bay, benefitting nearby residents and recreational users of the park. This project aligns with the San Francisco Estuary Partnership Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2027.
