DESCRIPTION:THE EAST BAY REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT FERRY POINT PIER REMOVAL PROJECT (THE PROJECT) WILL REMOVE THE REMAINS OF THE FERRY POINT PIER FERRY TERMINAL AND ASSOCIATED PILINGS AND STRUCTURES - INCLUDING OVER 1,000 TOXIC CREOSOTE-TREATED TIMBER PILES AND 16,500 SQUARE FEET OF CREOSOTE-TREATED, OVER WATER, WOOD DECKING FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY DELTA WATERSHED. THIS ACTION WILL REMOVE A SAFETY HAZARD, IMPROVE WATER QUALITY, AND BENEFIT THE SUBTIDAL HABITAT WITHIN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY. BECAUSE MOST OF THE PILES AT FERRY POINT CONTAIN CREOSOTE, THEIR REMOVAL WOULD BRING IMMEDIATE BENEFITS TO WATER QUALITY, NATURAL HABITATS FOR FISH SUCH AS THE PACIFIC HERRING, AND BAY ECOSYSTEMS OVERALL. THIS AGREEMENT PROVIDES FEDERAL FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,200,000.ACTIVITIES:TO IMPLEMENT THE SAN FRANCISCO ESTUARY PARTNERSHIP COMPREHENSIVE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT PLAN (CCMP), THE EAST BAY REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT FERRY POINT PIER REMOVAL PROJECT WILL ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES AT THE FERRY POINT PIER: REMOVE APPROXIMATELY 1,040, 12-TO-14-INCH DIAMETER CREOSOTE-TREATED TIMBER PILES FROM THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT. REMOVING THE PILES WILL RESTORE APPROXIMATELY 800 SQUARE FEET OF BENTHIC SUBSTRATE. REMOVE APPROXIMATELY 16,500 SQUARE FEET OF OVERWATER CREOSOTE-TREATED WOOD DECKING. SUBRECIPIENT:NO SUBAWARDS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ASSISTANCE AGREEMENT.OUTCOMES:ANTICIPATED DELIVERABLES INCLUDE: REMOVAL OF APPROXIMATELY 1,040, 12-TO-14-INCH DIAMETER CREOSOTE-TREATED TIMBER PILES FROM THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT. REMOVAL OF APPROXIMATELY 16,500 SQUARE FEET OF OVERWATER CREOSOTE-TREATED WOOD DECKING. REMOVING THE PILES WILL RESTORE APPROXIMATELY 800 SQUARE FEET OF BENTHIC SUBSTRATE. THE FERRY POINT PIER IS PART OF MILLER-KNOX REGIONAL SHORELINE WHICH SITS ALONG THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY SHORELINE IN THE CITY OF RICHMOND. THE INTENDED BENEFICIARIES OF THIS PROJECT ARE THE NEARBY COMMUNITIES WHO ACCESS THE MILLER-KNOX REGIONAL SHORELINE AND THE LIVING RESOURCES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND ITS WATERSHEDS.
