Description
This agreement provides funding under the inflation reduction act (IRA) to the air conditioning, heating and refrigeration technology institute (ahrti) for hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) innovative destruction. The recipient will work with industry partners to implement a pilot project that includes the design and testing of an innovative technology to destroy hfcs, which are potent greenhouse gases. The HFC destruction technology will allow for highly mixed refrigerants that contain hfcs to be destroyed in a way that chemically converts them to other substances which can then be used again. The project thus will eliminate these hfcs, ensuring they do not enter the atmosphere and contribute to climate change, while also converting the hfcs into useable products for other chemical applications.activities:the activities include engaging with key stakeholders and developing a project advisory committee, soliciting private sector contractors to design and build the technology, designing and constructing the demonstration scale plant, and finally conducting an analysis of the efficacy and efficiency of the demonstrated technology.subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:the anticipated deliverables include: the development of a project advisory committee; a competitive process to select contractors; quarterly and end of year reports; the design, construction, and testing of a demonstration plant to destroy hfcs through chemical conversion; analysis of test results and the purity of final chemical products; increased knowledge of HFC destruction through innovative techniques. The expected outcomes include more engaged stakeholders in the development of HFC chemical conversion technology through the project advisory board, improved understanding of the chemical conversion process to destruct refrigerants based on detailed design specifications, progress toward demonstrating the capability of safely recovering useful products from end-of-life, unwanted refrigerants, including a starting point for the scale up for commercial operations; demonstrated effectiveness and efficiency of the technology; improved decision-making based on demonstration tests of refrigerant destruction using chemical conversion technology. The intended beneficiaries include the public, who will benefit from improved air quality and reduced climate impacts associated with hfcs, and the destruction industry, that benefit from improved technologies that are more efficient and innovative. In addition, direct beneficiaries of this project include funding recipients in arlington, VA and additional sites that depend on the contractors selected through the competitive process.
