About this award

This federal Project Grant award, totaling $5,956,030.00, was provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) under the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program (CFDA 20.325). The grant recipient, the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway Company (Crandic Railway), is a Class III railroad that provides last-mile and switching services for 17 customers. The funding will support the replacement of the UP Overhead Bridge, which is the sole route across the Union Pacific mainline that saw 48,783 cars in 2023. The bridge, which began service in 1905, has surpassed its expected lifespan and no longer meets the current 286K car loading requirements. The grant award will enable the recipient to complete the bridge replacement project by January 31, 2027, which is critically necessary within the next 10 years.
