About this award

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration awarded the MS Department of Public Safety $1.925 million on December 1, 2025, under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237).

The award funds three coordinated projects to reduce commercial motor vehicle crashes and unsafe driving in Mississippi's high-crash corridors through December 31, 2028. Project 1 deploys at least 100 high-visibility traffic enforcement details across northern, central, and southern regions, including one bus detail per region each quarter and targeted work zone enforcement. Officers will make a minimum of six CMV contacts per eight-hour shift, supported by Acusensus mobile mounted artificial intelligence camera trailer systems deployed across all three regions. Daytime and nighttime enforcement targets unsafe driving behaviors including speeding, distracted driving, and driver fatigue, complemented by public education and data-driven adjustments. Project 2 conducts eight rural road enforcement details in high-crash corridor counties using eight certified motor carrier units per eight-hour shift, with both marked and unmarked vehicles, targeting the same unsafe behaviors plus seat belt and hours-of-service violations. Project 2 also deploys Acusensus mobile camera systems. Project 3 funds a paid public education campaign promoting CMV "safe zone" awareness and educating drivers on human trafficking detection and prevention.

All work is performed in Mississippi.

Description

Project #1 objective: the proposed project involves conducting at least I 00 high-visibility traffic enforcement details in CMV high-crash corridors, including one bus detail per region each quarter and targeted enforcement in work zones. Officers will make a minimum of six CMV contacts per eight-hour shift, supported by the deployment of acusensus mobile mounted camera trailer systems across the northem, central, and southern regions. The applicant will implement high-visibility daytime and nighttime traffic enforcement in mississippi's high-crash corridors to reduce CMV-related crashes and criminal activity, focusing on unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and driver fatigue. Efforts will be supported by the use of mobile acusensus artificial intelligence camera trailer systems, enabling real-time monitoring and enforcement in high-risk areas and work zones, while public education and ongoing data analysis will guide adjustments and outreach. Project #2 objective: the proposed project involves conducting high-visibility traffic enforcement in high-crash corridor work zones, including eight rural road enforcement details with at least eight certified motor carrier units per eight-hour shift. The initiative will utilize acusensus mobile mounted camera trailer systems and require officers to make a minimum of six CMV contacts per shift to reduce crashes in rural areas. The applicant will conduct eight high-?visibility traffic enforcement details using eight certified motor carrier units per 8-hour shift on rural roads within high-crash corridor counties, targeting unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and violations related to fatigue, seat belts, and 00S orders. Both marked and unmarked vehicles will be used. Project #3 objective: the proposed project involves a paid public education campaign to promote "safe zone" CMV awareness and educate the motoring public and CMV drivers on human trafficking detection and prevention. Additional objectives include quarterly trucking industry safety meetings, at least one "troopers and truckers working together to save lives" event, and integration of anti-human trafficking messaging in partnership with the MS department of public safety bureau of investigation. The paid media campaign will launch with television and radio ADS aimed at saturating target markets, supported by a press conference and news release to maximize public awareness. The mississippi highway patrol's public affairs division will lead creative development, media placement, and coordination of ongoing earned media through district public affairs officers and timed press releases throughout the year.
