About this award

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) awarded the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) $1,232,567 under the Commercial Driver's License Program Implementation Grant (CFDA 20.232) on September 30, 2025, with a completion date of September 30, 2029. This project grant supports ALEA's multi-faceted initiative to enhance the integrity and efficiency of Alabama's Commercial Driver's License (CDL) program. Key deliverables include ensuring timely processing of convictions within the 49 CFR 384.209 10-day regulatory timeframe, monitoring medical card workflows to verify proper attachment of Skills Performance Evaluations, medical waivers, and license restrictions to driver records, and reducing wait times at the three busiest CDL skills testing offices through increased daily test capacity.

Additionally, ALEA will conduct statewide and regional capacity-building activities including hosting a Southeastern Regional CDL Training Meeting in Fall 2026, providing comprehensive training and education to CDL staff and third-party CDL examiners, and conducting both overt and covert operations during test administration to ensure program integrity. The grant also funds operational support through uniforms and equipment for CDL staff. These activities align with the CDLPI program's focus on enhancing CDL compliance, testing integrity, and data quality while supporting the federal "One Driver - One License - One Record" mandate.
