About this award

The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has awarded the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) a $421,204 Project Grant under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237). The purpose of this grant is to enhance the portable weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales system in New Mexico, which will benefit the motor carrier industry by enabling more efficient movement of commerce through the state and early detection of tire and wheel failures on commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). This will ultimately help save the lives of CMV drivers and the motoring public.

The grant will fund the implementation of Automated Tire Pressure Systems (ATPS) at three locations in New Mexico - the Anthony Port of Entry, San Jon, and Lordsburg Port of Entry. The ATPS will automatically screen and detect flat, low, and over-inflated tires on passing CMVs without the need for human intervention, and will integrate with the state's existing Smart Roadside Information System. This advanced technology can detect up to five times as many tire defects as a traditional flat tire detection system. The grant period of performance is from September 1, 2023 through September 30, 2027.
