About this award
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $16 million to the Puerto Rico Highway & Transportation Authority on August 12, 2025, under the Nationally Significant Freight and Highway Projects program (CFDA 20.934) to improve transportation infrastructure in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The project encompasses comprehensive improvements to PR-2 intersections with five connecting routes across a 0.48-kilometer roadway section, delivering pedestrian and vehicular safety enhancements including sidewalk reconstruction, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handicapped ramps, curbs, concrete barriers, and safety devices. Additional project deliverables include drainage system improvements, highway lighting installation, traffic signal and signage systems, pavement markings, modular concrete retaining walls, and relocation of public utility infrastructure for PREPA (Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority), PRASA (Puerto Rico Aqueducts and Sewers Authority), and telecommunication providers.
The design-build project incorporates four phased construction phases with integrated maintenance of traffic protocols and concludes with landscape reforestation activities. As a competitive federal grant program authorizing $8 billion across fiscal years 2022-2026 under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Nationally Significant Freight and Highway Projects program supports highway, freight rail, port, and intermodal infrastructure of national or regional significance. This award reflects the program's commitment to funding critical transportation infrastructure improvements through eligible public entities, with the Puerto Rico Highway & Transportation Authority serving as the primary recipient responsible for project execution and delivery.
