About this award
The Department of Transportation Maritime Administration awarded Miami-Dade County $51,322,068 under the Nationally Significant Freight and Highway Projects program (CFDA 20.934) on March 12, 2026, to electrify cargo handling equipment and infrastructure at PortMiami.
The project acquires approximately 47 terminal tractors, three hybrid rubber tired gantry cranes, 76 hybrid trucks, and 42 dual charging stations, along with supporting electrical infrastructure serving two cargo terminals. A separate component replaces approximately 432 existing diesel-powered reefer generators with all-electric reefer outlets, expanding total reefer capacity to approximately 820 plugs. Work comprises four components: engineering and design for reefer generators; equipment purchase for Seaboard (nine utility tractor rigs, three hybrid cranes, two dual charging stations); equipment purchase for South Florida Container Terminal (approximately 40 dual charging stations, 38 utility tractor rigs, 70 hybrid pickup trucks, and six hybrid sport utility vehicles); and supporting infrastructure including demolition, elevated concrete pads, electrical system expansion, and approximately 388 additional reefer outlets. Performance is located in Miami, Florida. The period of performance extends through October 31, 2029. Expected outcomes include measurement of total annual cargo volume in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and total tons of cargo moved per year, tracked quarterly.
