- This $746,866 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants program (CFDA 16.560) will fund a comprehensive, multiphasic study to characterize the emerging forensic discipline of hand image comparison. The key products and services to be delivered under this 3-year award include: Establishing a Hand Comparison Working Group (HAND-WG) to provide expert input on the study's approaches Conducting a survey to...
- This $980,527 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Justice (CFDA 16.560 - National Institute of Justice Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants) aims to enhance and expand the HirisPlex-S (HPS) forensic DNA phenotyping tool for predicting an individual's physical appearance traits such as eye, hair, and skin color. The key objectives are to: 1) develop quantitative prediction models to complement the existing HPS web-based tool, 2) utilize deep learning to...
- This federal Project Grant award, provided by the National Institute of Justice under the Forensics Training and Technical Assistance Program (CFDA 16.044), aims to calibrate a proposed conclusion scale for pattern comparison disciplines by computing consensus-based likelihood ratios. The $609,185 award to the Trustees of Indiana University, which runs from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026, has three primary deliverables: Publish the image pairs, examiner response distributions, and...
- This Project Grant award of $111,000 from the National Institute of Justice (CFDA 16.560) to Iowa State University of Science and Technology will fund research to develop machine learning methods for extracting information from fingerprint samples. The first aim is to determine the time-since-deposition of a fingerprint, which could help investigators establish when a crime occurred. The second aim is to analyze fingerprint chemistry to infer the physical activity level of the individual,...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), under the Federal Grant Program for Measurement Science and Engineering (CFDA 11.609), provides $199,989 to the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) to conduct research on forensic facial examiner performance and methods for effectively combining human and machine face recognition systems. The key products and services to be delivered include: Administering a test to forensic examiners to assess their...
- This Project Grant award, valued at $487,790, was provided by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) under the Forensics Training and Technical Assistance Program (CFDA 16.044). The award to Florida International University (FIU) aims to implement a comparative evaluation of the Minion and MiSeq sequencing platforms for analyzing human hand microbial profiles as a potential forensic investigative tool. The project activities include: Comparing the performance of the Minion and MiSeq platforms...
- Under a $299,551 Cooperative Agreement (70NANB24H078) awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) through the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) program, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) will provide training, tools, and resources to increase awareness, adoption, and implementation of forensic science standards on the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) Registry. The project aims to engage forensic...
- This $231,000 Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) program, aims to gather information on the current and emerging landscape of AI systems for forensic science applications. The prime recipient, Apco Worldwide LLC, will conduct a comprehensive research effort involving literature reviews, news and social media analysis, community surveys, and focus groups. The key...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Justice (CFDA 16.560 - National Institute of Justice Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants) provides $399,437.00 to Iowa State University of Science and Technology to develop a semi-empirical kinetics model for determining the time-since-deposition of latent fingerprints. The researchers aim to rigorously establish a reliable method to estimate when a fingerprint was deposited at a crime scene, which can help link suspects to...
- This National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grant (CFDA 16.560) for $431,892 awarded to Florida International University (FIU) aims to improve the performance and reliability of forensic hair testing for drug use, with a focus on analyzing single dose drug exposures associated with drug-facilitated crimes. The project will conduct design of experiment studies to further optimize protocols for extracting and analyzing drugs and metabolites from hair...
PURPOSE: IMPROVE THE SELECTION OF FINGERPRINT EXAMINERS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES BY ADAPTING AND EVALUATING A COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT DEPLOYED IN OTHER COUNTRIES.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT WILL BE ACHIEVED BY WORKING WITH SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS TO DEFINE AND IMPLEMENT A STRATEGY FOR SOURCING OR DEVELOPING APPROPRIATE, SECURE, AND OPERATIONALLY RELEVANT FINGERPRINT STIMULI. AFTER MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT THE TEAM WILL WORK ON ADAPTION AND DELIVERY FORMAT OF THE XQ FRAMEWORK, DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS, AND REPORTING ON METHODOLOGY, ADAPTATION PROCESS, DATA ANALYSIS, AND KEY FINDINGS.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: ADAPTION OF THE XQ FRAMEWORK FOR THE US FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT FINGERPRINT EXAMINER WITH DOCUMENTATION WITH SPECIFICATIONS FOR CURATING STIMULUS SETS, TASK INSTRUCTIONS, VALIDATED DELIVERY FORMAT, AND SCORING GUIDELINES.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION LABORATORY DIVISION WOULD BE THE PRIMARY END-USER OF THE ADAPTED TOOL. A DIRECT AND MAJOR IMPACT WILL BE PROVIDING THE FBI WITH AN EVIDENCE BASE THAT CAN HELP THEM IMPROVE EXAMINER SELECTION. IT WILL ALSO BENEFIT FBI PARTNERS IN OTHER FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORIES.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE: SIMULUS SELECTION CRITERIA, DEVELOPMENT OF DELIVERY FORMAT, VALIDATION OF DELIVERY FORMATMURDOCH UNIVERSITY: STATISTICAL METHODOLOGY FOR VALIDATION, PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS, DATA INTERPRETATION, PREPARATION OF TECHNICAL REPORTS, ADMINISTRATIVE ASPECTS.
