About this award

The Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service awarded the Maine Department of Education $2.912 million on October 1, 2025, for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (CFDA 10.582), a project grant extending through September 30, 2026, to provide free fresh fruits and vegetables to elementary schools in Maine with high percentages of children eligible for free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program.

The program targets elementary schools based on the percentage of enrolled children receiving free or reduced-price meals. Participating schools must operate in accordance with federal requirements and maintain active participation in the National School Lunch Program. The Maine Department of Education, as the state agency, selected schools and entered into agreements with school food authorities to implement the program, with schools committing to serve fresh produce free to all enrolled children and publicize fruit and vegetable availability.

Performance occurs statewide across Maine. The Maine Department of Education distributes the $2.912 million obligated amount to 66 named sub-recipients—primarily regional school units, school administrative districts, municipal school departments, and individual elementary schools throughout Maine's 16 counties. Sub-recipients include Regional School Unit 9, Regional School Unit 19, Regional School Unit 20, Regional School Unit 40, Regional School Unit 50, Regional School Unit 71, Regional School Unit 88, Maine School Administrative Districts 1, 4, 17, 31, 41, 46, 55, 59, 70, 72, and 74, school departments in Sanford, Westbrook, Waterville, Biddeford, Portland, Bangor, Lewiston, Augusta, South Portland, Auburn, Calais, Eastport, Madawaska, Winslow, Lisbon, Medway, Edna Drinkwater Elementary, Bay Ridge Elementary, Fayette Central, and dozens of other elementary and consolidated schools. Sub-recipients deliver fresh fruit and vegetable products to eligible elementary schools and ensure distribution to students at no cost.
