Description

Abstract
How to achieve evidence-based conservation has been a topic of debate for at least the last quarter century. IT was against that backdrop that the US national science foundation and the allen family philanthropies (formerly the paul G. Allen family foundation) collaborated to launch the partnerships to advance conservation science and practice (PACSP) program. The goal of PACSP was to support projects involving scientists and conservation practitioners to work together on conservation actions that would inform both basic science as well as conservation practice. Over the course of three funding cycles the program supported projects that focused on a highly diverse array of US-based conservation problems and an equally diverse set of approaches and biological foci. At this point there is the opportunity to convene these project participants to discuss how this funding model has worked, including the challenges that projects have faced, how well the projects are informing conservation and basic science, guidance for further success at the conservation-basic science interface, and possible future directions. This award will provide partial support for a meeting of PACSP awardees. The conference will be held august 31-september 1, 2026, at the arnold and mabel beckman center for conservation research in escondido, CA. The goal of this conference is to bring together members of the PACSP project teams, both scientists and conservation practitioners, to share experiences at the interface of basic science and application to conservation. The participants are from a wide array of institutions involved in such projects, including academic, state, local and national government, foundations, and tribal nations. The conference program will include presentations from projects supported by the program, conversations about the challenges and successes in science-conservation partnerships, as well as the future of work at this interface. Assembled participants will create a draft white paper highlighting the key takeaways from the discussions to help improve our understanding and future implementation of science-informed conservation actions that are as successful as possible. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.- subawards are not planned for this award.
