- This $996,259 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Resources Conservation Service (CFDA 10.907 - Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting program) aims to evaluate the potential of an automated mountain weather and snowpack monitoring network in the Northeastern U.S. and determine the number of sites, staff, and resources required to implement such a network. The University of New Hampshire is the prime awardee, and will collaborate with the...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure awarded the University of Vermont $584,821 on March 15, 2026, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) to strengthen open research data infrastructure and capacity across Vermont through the Vermont Research Open Source Program Office (VERSO). The project expands UVM's institutional data repositories to make research outputs more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable...
- The National Science Foundation awarded the University of Vermont & State Agricultural College $1,000,000 on January 1, 2026, to build experiential learning pathways to careers in emerging technology fields for rural Vermont communities under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084). The project delivers a curated gap-year experience for recent high school graduates not pursuing college, consisting of a residential summer practicum, year-long paid internships...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Vermont $1.1 million on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) for a project grant studying intertidal ecosystem resilience along the Pacific Coast. The University of Vermont will combine field studies, genomics, physiological measurements, and ecological modeling to develop predictive tools for forecasting how coastal ecosystems respond to environmental stress, with particular...
- The University of Vermont & State Agricultural College, doing business as the University of Vermont (UVM), received a $499,936 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805). The purpose of this 3-year project is to develop and maintain a watershed nutrient and salt monitoring program during winter months in Vermont. The researchers will deploy and maintain sensors to measure nutrients and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences awarded the University of Utah $699,464 on July 1, 2026, to measure how air motions perturb snowflake orientation and settling velocity, with funding continuing through June 30, 2029. This Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will conduct field measurements at Alta, Utah, using a meteorological tower, multi-angle snowflake camera (MASC) for high-resolution imagery of hydrometeors in free fall,...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of Vermont & State Agricultural College received a $1.64 million Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) awarded September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2028. The award funds the construction and deployment of ICECORE, a graphics processing unit (GPU)-focused, high-performance computing (HPC) cluster managed by the Vermont Advanced Computing Center at the University of Vermont....
- The National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology awarded the University of Vermont $719,114 on August 1, 2026, under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to advance understanding of carbon cycling within sugar maple trees across seasonal and interannual timescales. The research quantifies seasonal patterns of carbon pools and fluxes in sugar maple using physiological measurements including growth patterns, sap composition evolution, and nonstructural carbon reserves....
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences awarded the University of Vermont & State Agricultural College a $695,471 Project Grant on June 15, 2025, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate the impacts of relative humidity on organic new particle formation in the atmosphere. The research deliverables include systematic laboratory studies conducted through environmental chamber research that will measure...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Vermont $3,259,097 on August 1, 2026, under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to establish a regional snow and weather monitoring network across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The project will install snow and weather measurement equipment at key locations to close observational gaps in Northern New England and advance understanding of snow accumulation and melt processes, orographic precipitation enhancement, rain-snow partitioning, and weather-sensitive economic behavior in winter-dependent industries. Work will integrate automated sensors, manual snow observations, crowdsourced measurements, data assimilation techniques, physically based snow models, economic analysis, and qualitative social science methods. The project will deliver online dashboards to help local providers and forecasters plan and respond to variable winter conditions and natural hazards. The University of Vermont leads the effort with sub-recipients including the University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, Vermont State University Lyndon, University of Maine at Farmington, and Mount Washington Observatory. The project will expand the STEM workforce by training students, volunteers, and other professionals across the region to strengthen regional research capacity and rural economic development. Performance of work occurs at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, with expanded instrumentation at established field sites across the three-state region. The period of performance runs from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2030.
