About this program
The National Science Foundation's Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) funds capacity-building and research infrastructure investments that enhance U.S. competitiveness across science and engineering, with the most recent award issued in September 2027.
The program has awarded 2,023 grants totaling $2.97 billion in federal dollars since 2006. Award activity remains robust: the past five years show 348 awards in 2023, 427 in 2024, 255 in 2025, 178 in 2026, and 34 through early 2027. The portfolio is dominated by Project Grants (87 percent of awards) with a smaller share of Cooperative Agreements (13 percent). Funding is concentrated within NSF's own divisions: the NSF Office of Integrative Activities accounts for 1,566 awards and $1.68 billion, followed by general NSF funding at 445 awards and $1.28 billion. The remaining six federal funders—including NSF's Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences, Division of Chemical/Bioengineering/Environmental/Transport Systems, and Office of Emerging Frontiers and Multidisciplinary Activities—represent a long tail of modest funding.
Recent awards span the NSF's research portfolio breadth. The EPSCOR Research Fellows track dominates recent activity, funding assistant and associate professors at institutions in underrepresented states to build research capacity through fellowships and graduate-student training. Recent fellows have investigated grassland drought resilience in Montana, museomics and evolutionary discovery in Idaho, atmospheric cloud-aerosol interactions off the Pacific coast, physics-informed AI for coastal water prediction, quantum Hamiltonians, polymer synthesis via robotics, cellulose composite durability, permafrost landslide mechanics, supernova astrophysics, quantum materials under pressure, and magnetic inductors for extreme-environment electronics. Beyond EPSCOR, recent awards support major research infrastructure—including a multi-sensor airspace monitoring system at Kent State University, X-ray diffractometry at Vassar College, and NMR spectroscopy in South Texas—as well as excellence-in-research projects at HBCUs and minority-serving institutions investigating quantum information science, additive manufacturing, AI for grid optimization, ecosystem forecasting, and cascading heat-system failures. A $2.59 million MRI award supports remote tower instrumentation for mixed airspace management research.
Several grant opportunities remain open under related NSF programs that leverage Integrative Activities capacity: the Accelerating Research Translation program (due March 12, 2026) supports institutional research translation ecosystems, the NSF Translation to Practice program (due November 17, 2026) funds use-inspired research across three tracks, and NSF I-Corps Teams (posted September 26, 2025) accelerates commercialization of NSF-funded discoveries. EPSCoR collaborations and research incubators continue to solicit proposals for regional research infrastructure and workforce development.
