Friends of Hawaii's Urban Forest (doing business as Smart Trees Pacific) received a $330,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Region 5 – Pacific Southwest Region, under the Urban and Community Forestry Program (CFDA 10.675). The award, issued on August 25, 2025, with a completion date of June 30, 2027, funds educational outreach and technical services focused on urban forestry best practices in Hawaii.

The grant deliverables include educational programming and technical assistance on selecting appropriate tree species for specific locations, proper planting and maintenance techniques, and the ecological and community benefits of green spaces and trees in urban environments. Additionally, the project provides disaster recovery response services and technical support for urban forest management. These services are designed to build capacity in arboriculture and advance sustainable urban forest ecosystems across Pacific Island communities, consistent with the Urban and Community Forestry Program's mission to support the health and expansion of urban and community forests through financial, technical, and educational assistance to eligible organizations.

This project provides educational outreach and technical services on the principles of identifying the right tree for the right place, proper planting and maintenance techniques, the importance of green spaces and trees in urban settings, and disaster recovery responses for urban forests.
