About this program
The Department of Agriculture Forest Service is funding urban and community forest management, restoration, and stewardship projects under the Urban and Community Forestry Program (CFDA 10.675), with the most recent award made on August 3, 2026.
The program finances technical, financial, and educational assistance for planting, maintaining, and managing trees in populated areas; hazard tree assessment and removal; wood utilization from urban trees; workforce development in arboriculture and forest management; community education on tree species selection and care; and forest resilience efforts addressing invasive species, pest damage, and disaster recovery. Recent awards reflect the breadth: a $97,957 grant to strengthen and expand the Capetillo Food Forest in San Juan, Puerto Rico through forest management, nursery repairs, and community workshops; a $309,000 award providing technical assistance to increase tree canopy and public health benefits; and a $600,000 grant supporting state and municipal forest stewardship with subgrant programs for tree planting, inventory, and monitoring. Construction expenses are not eligible. Grants run 12 to 60 months and require cost-share matching at dollar-for-dollar unless special circumstances warrant reduction.
Portfolio activity shows sustained funding with 1,055 total awards since 2003 and $190.4 million in combined federal obligations (recipient non-federal match adds $174.9 million). Award volume has moderated from 28 annually in 2022–2023 to 20 in 2025 and 4 in 2026 to date. The program is predominantly Project Grants (90 percent of awards) with a smaller Cooperative Agreement component (10 percent). Funding concentrates heavily within the Forest Service itself: the parent Department of Agriculture Forest Service has issued 678 awards ($101.5 million), the Eastern Region (R9) has issued 150 awards ($39.5 million), and the Pacific Southwest Region (R5) has issued 43 awards ($19.4 million). Award magnitudes typically range from $50,000 to $1.2 million, with a recent mega-award of $2.2 million to the Illinois Urban and Community Forestry Program.
The 2026 National Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Cost Share Grant Program (USDA-FS-UCF-01-2026) is currently open with a due date of October 12, 2026, soliciting competitive proposals on community tree resource utilization—converting wood from pruning, removals, and storm events into lumber, furniture, biochar, or other products that strengthen local economies and reduce disposal costs. Eligible applicants include state, local, and tribal governments; 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits; higher education institutions; independent school districts; public housing authorities; and special district governments.
