- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded The Regents of the University of Colorado $503,299 on September 1, 2026, under the Polar Programs assistance listing (CFDA 47.078) to digitize and analyze historical aerial photographs of Greenland outlet glaciers held by the U.S. National Archives and reconstruct past glacier surface elevations using structure-from-motion photogrammetry and high-resolution satellite ground control data. The project will process film negatives...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded $200,000 to The Regents of the University of Colorado on August 15, 2026, under the Polar Programs assistance listing (CFDA 47.078) for research on snow and glacial algae bioalbedo feedbacks in Greenland. The project studies how snow and glacial algae (SGA) growing on melting ice surfaces darken the ice, increase solar heat absorption, and accelerate melting through a positive feedback loop. The research aims to develop an...

The research is being conducted under the NSF's Polar Programs, with a focus on strengthening fundamental knowledge and understanding of polar regions as outlined in the program's CFDA #47.078....
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded a $990,272 project grant to The Trustees of Columbia University in New York City to support research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: GRATE - INTEGRATING DATA AND MODELING TO QUANTIFY RATES OF GREENLAND ICE SHEET CHANGE, HOLOCENE TO FUTURE." The period of performance for this research is from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2025. The research aims to strengthen understanding of the Greenland Ice Sheet and its response to...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Polar Programs awarded a $133,492 Project Grant to the University of Florida (UF), through its Division of Sponsored Research, to conduct collaborative research on quantifying the effect of moraine building on the stability of Greenland tidewater glaciers. The project aims to collect observations from the fronts of three Greenland outlet glaciers to determine if the deposition of sediment at the ice-ocean boundary is responsible for the...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $2.8 million project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for the period of October 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026. The project aims to map changes in Greenland resulting from ice thinning and explore emerging landslide and hazard risks. Researchers will integrate local observations from Greenlandic communities with remote sensing data to understand how hazards evolve over time. Advanced...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) awarded $372,486.00 to Trustees of Tufts College for a collaborative research project addressing ice-ocean interaction physics at marine-terminating glaciers in Greenland. The four-year project, initiated September 1, 2025 and concluding August 31, 2029, integrates direct field measurements of submarine melt rates and near-ice boundary-layer dynamics with numerical modeling to improve...
- The University of Montana was awarded a $1,199,063 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs to conduct collaborative research on observing the transformation of the Greenland ice sheet firn layer. The grant was awarded on November 1, 2021 with a completion date of October 31, 2026. Under the NSF's Polar Programs, which aims to expand fundamental knowledge of polar regions through basic research best conducted in or related to the Arctic and Antarctic (CFDA...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will fund a $408,486 study at the University of Washington to conduct a large-scale assessment of iceberg mélange (a mixture of sea ice and icebergs) and its impacts on glacier retreat in Greenland. The 3-year project will utilize satellite data to map the location and timing of mélange formation and breakup around the Greenland ice sheet, and then compare this to measurements of changing glacier...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Polar Programs awarded $343,679 to the University of Massachusetts under the Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) to conduct collaborative research examining tectonic influences on Greenland Ice Sheet (GRIS) stability. The award, effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2029, supports the development of advanced integrated modeling frameworks that combine ice-sheet, atmospheric, and geologic constraints to evaluate...
The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded Morgan State University $187,975 on September 1, 2026, to conduct collaborative research constraining Greenland glacier dynamics using 1940s historical aerial photography. The project will digitize and analyze unprocessed aerial photographs taken by the U.S. military over Greenland in the 1940s and 1950s, currently held as film negatives by the U.S. National Archives. Of hundreds of thousands of historical photographs collected over Greenland, less than 4 percent have been digitized and almost none have been used to study glacier change. Using structure-from-motion photogrammetry with ground control provided by high-resolution satellite data, investigators will reconstruct past glacier surface elevations and generate orthorectified imagery, extending the historical record of ice sheet change by decades beyond current knowledge. The project will integrate historical data products into forward glacier mass simulations for both peripheral and ice sheet outlet glaciers, comparing projection ensembles to quantify how historical constraints can reduce uncertainty in future projections. Students will participate in all research phases from data digitization through analysis. The work will archive and preserve historical imagery that would otherwise continue to degrade and produce a dataset intended for broad scientific community use. Performance occurs in Baltimore, Maryland. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2029. This is a Project Grant under the Polar Programs assistance listing (CFDA 47.078).
