The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $600,000 Project Grant under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to the Research Foundation for the State University of New York, doing business as SUNY Potsdam. The 3-year grant, effective December 1, 2024, will support a research project investigating the influence of ATP on ferritin structure, function, and cellular iron homeostasis. The project aims to provide a detailed understanding of how cytosolic components, such as ATP and other nucleotides, affect ferritin structural changes, iron mineralization, and mobilization, with implications for understanding cellular iron regulation and related diseases. The work will utilize a variety of biophysical, biochemical, and machine learning techniques, and provide undergraduate students with multidisciplinary research opportunities. No sub-awards are planned under this grant.
