Central iowa shelter and services ciss has initiated a project to establish agrihood in downtown DES moines a venture designed to positively impact the local food system while simultaneously providing opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness. This project will recruit over 120 beginning farmers to cultivate produce and fish products with these items then being sold through directtoconsumer channels across central iowa. A key component is a valueadded agriculture program where these farmers operate a food truck at local markets and events featuring fish tacos prepared from agrihood products and served by trainees. The anticipated outcome is increased sales of these products creating a sustainable source of accessible local food for consumers and other stakeholders. The project aims to generate sales that will allow for reinvestment into the agrihood solidifying its role as a talent pipeline for beginning farmers and entrepreneurs. The projects beneficiaries include those individuals experiencing homelessness who are actively working toward selfsufficiency as well as the broader community seeking access to fresh food. The projects success hinges on expanding tourism and promoting local food education at the agrihood location.
