This Project Grant award of $100,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) supports a project led by Bryn Mawr College to develop recommendations for enhancing research development support at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs). The project will convene a series of regional workshops involving approximately 16 PUI representatives per workshop to examine the unique challenges and strengths of research development functions at PUIs....
This $602,858 National Science Foundation project grant to Chapman University will evaluate the impact of the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) Network on implementing the Vision and Change (V&C) framework for undergraduate biology education. Through a mixed-methods approach including surveys and interviews, the project aims to determine the extent to which V&C principles motivated participation in PALM, characterize perceptions of V&C among instructors involved, and...
The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory was awarded a $359,148 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education under the STEM Education (47.076) federal grant program. The award will support the development of course-based undergraduate research experiences integrating advanced DNA sequencing technologies at minority-serving institutions from June 2022 to May 2024. Specifically, the Laboratory will partner with New York City College of Technology, Spelman...
This $100,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of course-based undergraduate research experiences integrating advanced DNA sequencing technologies at minority-serving institutions. Awarded June 15, 2022 through May 31, 2024 under the NSF's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), the University of Puerto Rico will work with partners to co-develop classroom protocols and teaching tools incorporating nanopore DNA sequencing into hands-on training for biology...
This $127,694 National Science Foundation project grant will support the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory's 2023 Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site program. Titled "Pathways to Inclusive Science: Emerging Field Techniques," the program will provide 10 undergraduate students from across the U.S. with 10 weeks of training in field research methods and responsible conduct of research. Particular focus will be given to recruiting minority and community college students....
This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program aims to develop, test, and publish a collection of approximately 45 Core Concept Teaching Tools (CCTTs) to help biology students transfer their knowledge of core concepts across scales and sub-disciplines. The $232,710 award to the University of Colorado will support bringing together biology educators to create the CCTTs, which will include narratives describing complex biological phenomena and activities...

RCN-UBE: CELL BIOLOGY EDUCATION CONSORTIUM: PATHWAY TO PUBLICATION -THE CELL BIOLOGY EDUCATION CONSORTIUM: PATH TO PUBLICATION (CBEC: P2P) RESEARCH COLLABORATIVE NETWORK IS INTENDED TO ASSIST PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION (PUI) FACULTY WITH PUBLISHING RESEARCH IN A PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL. CONDUCTING AND PUBLISHING RESEARCH CAN BE CHALLENGING AT PUIS WHERE HIGH FACULTY TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES ARE BALANCED WITH MENTORING OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTS AND TEAMS. THIS PROJECT WILL ADDRESS THIS PUBLICATION DISCONNECT BY HELPING FACULTY PREPARE SINGLE-FIGURE MANUSCRIPTS FROM THEIR DATA, ADVANCING FACULTY AND THEIR STUDENTS ON A PATHWAY TO PUBLICATION. BY REDUCING BARRIERS TO PUBLICATION, FACULTY CAN HELP STUDENTS TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION PROCESS WHILE GENERATING THEIR OWN PUBLICATION RECORD THAT WILL HELP WITH CAREER ADVANCEMENT. COLLECTIVELY, THIS WILL HELP FACULTY BUILD THEIR RESEARCH CREDENTIALS AND ALLOW UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND FACULTY TO BECOME PUBLISHED AUTHORS IN A RECOGNIZED SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL. THE INFRASTRUCTURE ESTABLISHED BY THIS PROJECT SUPPORTS THE ENHANCEMENT, EXPANSION, AND SUSTAINABILITY OF UNDERGRADUATE CELL BIOLOGY-RELATED RESEARCH. OVERALL, THE DEVELOPMENT OF FREELY ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES THAT HIGHLIGHT A CLEAR PATH TO PUBLICATION IMPROVES THE STEM PIPELINE, HELPS TO RETAIN PUI FACULTY, AND WILL SERVE AS A MODEL FOR OTHER DISCIPLINES. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES A NEED EXPRESSED BY CELL BIOLOGY EDUCATORS THAT WHILE THE QUALITY OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IS HIGH, FACULTY OFTEN DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO GENERATE THE EXTENSIVE DATA REQUIRED TO PUBLISH RESEARCH IN TRADITIONAL SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS REQUIRING MULTIPLE RESULT FIGURES. HERE A WORKFLOW FOR A PATH TO PUBLICATION FOR CBEC FACULTY AND STUDENTS WILL BE DEVELOPED THAT RESULTS IN PUBLICATION OF A SINGLE-FIGURE RESEARCH PAPER IN MICROPUBLICATION BIOLOGY, A FULLY CITABLE JOURNAL PLATFORM. THIS WORKFLOW WILL BE A STEP-BY-STEP MECHANISM THAT ALLOWS CBEC: P2P FACULTY TO SUBMIT A SINGLE-FIGURE PAPER TO NETWORK LEADERS, RECEIVE FEEDBACK, RESUBMIT FOR FURTHER COMMENTS, AND ULTIMATELY SUBMIT THEIR WORK FOR PUBLICATION IN MICROPUBLICATION BIOLOGY. TO FURTHER ENHANCE RESEARCH SUCCESS, CBEC: P2P WILL ALSO HELP FACULTY ALIGN THEIR CLASS-BASED RESEARCH WITH THE PATH TO PUBLICATION WORKFLOW. THE PROTOCOLS DEVELOPED WILL BE FREELY SHARED WITH OTHERS AS OPEN EDUCATION RESOURCES. THIS PROJECT IS BEING JOINTLY FUNDED BY THE DIRECTORATE FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, DIVISION OF BIOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE, AND THE DIRECTORATE FOR STEM EDUCATION, DIVISION OF UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AS PART OF THEIR EFFORTS TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES POSED IN VISION AND CHANGE IN UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY EDUCATION: A CALL TO ACTION (HTTP://VISIONANDCHANGE/FINALREPORT/), AND THE ESTABLISHED PROGRAM TO STIMULATE COMPETITIVE RESEARCH (EPSCOR). THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.
