About this award

Edgewood Locker, Inc. received a $200,000 project grant award from the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service under the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grants – Supplemental Funding program (CFDA 10.180). The funding will support a $7.6 million expansion of Edgewood Locker's current facility located in Edgewood, IA. Approximately $1 million of the expansion costs will go towards new state-of-the-art equipment. The facility expansion will allow Edgewood Locker to increase production capacity, achieve separation of raw and cooked processing areas to enhance food safety, and obtain USDA inspection to expand distribution across state lines. The grant completion date is September 29, 2024.

Description

Expansion of the current facility. Approximately $1M will be spent on new state of the art equipment. The expansion will allow our business to grow in the following ways: we are pushing more inspected product through than IT was designed for. Work areas are congested. This expansion will allow US to do the work that we'RE already doing better, more efficiently, and with a better and safer working environment for employees. Growth of our wholesale business. We are planning to double the volume of wholesale business we currently do. Today we are not in any major grocery store or convenience store chains. In the future we look to provide wholesale product to those larger chains, especially in the larger metro markets where currently have voids. Theedgewood locker will transition to USDA inspection from state inspection around the same time we move into the new plant. USDA inspection will be critical as we look to reach customers across state lines. Food safety. In the new facility we will achieve perfect separation of raw and cooked product processing areas. Pass-through smokehouses will be one key factor to enable this. A focus on food safety will be built into every blueprint, material purchase, and equipment purchase. Custom processing capacity: this expansion project will allow US to increase the number of hogs we can process, thus allowing US to provide new markets for livestock producers and shorten lead times for slaughter appointments
