About this award

The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Case Western Reserve University $591,500 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop privacy-preserving data-sharing infrastructure for agricultural research.

The project will map privacy concerns among small and medium-sized farmers, design computer algorithms that anonymize sensitive farm data such as location and financial information while preserving analytical utility for disease and weather trend analysis, and build a secure online platform where farmers can contribute data and connect with peers without exposing raw private information. Work is performed in Cleveland, Ohio, with a period of performance through September 14, 2030.

The funding addresses a critical barrier to agricultural innovation: small and diversified farmers' hesitation to share operational and environmental data with researchers due to concerns about unfair pricing, inflated insurance costs, and competitive disadvantage. By enabling trusted data contribution, the project aims to unlock research opportunities that strengthen food security, protect natural resources, and support rural economic viability.

Description

However, these advanced tools require farmers to share highly sensitive business and environmental data. Small and medium-sized farmers are rightfully concerned that sharing this information could lead to harmful consequences, such as unfair market pricing, inflated insurance costs, or predatory competition. This widespread hesitation to share data creates a critical roadblock for agricultural research, stifling innovations that could otherwise strengthen our national food security, protect natural resources, and support the economic viability of rural communities.to overcome this barrier, our project will collaborate closely with farmers and agricultural organizations to map out their exact privacy concerns and identify the most vulnerable types of data. We will then design specialized computer algorithms that act as a digital shield, automatically scrambling sensitive details – like a farm's specific location or financial status – while still allowing researchers to analyze broader, vital trends like disease outbreaks or weather impacts. These tools will be housed in an easy-to-use, secure online platform where farmers can safely contribute their data and connect with peers without ever exposing their raw, private information. Ultimately, this project aims to bridge the GAP between agricultural innovation and data privacy, fostering a trusted environment where small and diversified farmers can confidently participate in and benefit from advanced technologies. By unlocking this previously inaccessible data safely, the project will drive a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural sector that empowers local farmers and safeguards the broader food supply chain.
