The platform is designed to...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded University of California, Davis $633,133 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on August 15, 2026, for research into foodborne pathogen contamination in leafy green vegetables, particularly lettuce. The project addresses the risk of Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli, including Shiga toxin-producing strains, in fresh produce through the farm-to-fork chain, with emphasis on...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Montana State University $590,962 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on May 1, 2026, to develop an automated bacterial detection and removal system for hydroponic farming. The project addresses biofilm contamination in hydroponic environments by integrating two complementary technologies. The first develops a sensor coated with DNA-based aptamers that selectively bind target bacteria; upon...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the Regents of the University of California at Riverside $120,000 on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to develop a rapid detection system for antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food products. The project will engineer a silicon-based biosensor with nano-scale features that uses light absorption to identify bacterial resistance mechanisms to common antibiotics such as...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $728,000 to The Trustees Of The Stevens Institute Of Technology on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to develop rapid, non-destructive methods for assessing food quality and predicting shelf life using ultra-wideband microwave imaging and deep learning technology. The project combines data science and microwave imaging to evaluate food products without physical...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Connecticut $273,000 on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to develop and test a light-spectrum-optimizing paint formulation for greenhouse microgreens production. The research addresses affordability barriers in controlled-environment agriculture by using carbon dots—engineered nanomaterials that convert light wavelengths—mixed into paint applied...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $591,491 to Texas A&M Agrilife Research on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to develop an AI-assisted decision support system for controlled environment agriculture greenhouse production of leafy greens. The system integrates edge computing, IoT-based sensing, computer vision, and predictive analytics to collect and analyze real-time data on greenhouse...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Connecticut $292,500 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026. The project will use artificial intelligence to identify promising biosurfactant candidates that can enhance the performance of sanitizers used in food processing, then validate the most effective compounds through laboratory testing on stainless steel surfaces. Biosurfactants are naturally...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $591,482 to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. on January 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop a plant chlorophyll fluorescence-based biofeedback system for real-time light intensity control in greenhouse and indoor vertical farm production. The project will establish optimal plant electron transport rate and quantum yield of photosystem II as...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Trustees of Tufts College $633,750 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to develop CLEAR (Comprehensive Light-Based Evaluation and AI Recognition for Pathogens), a compact sensor for rapid, non-destructive detection of harmful bacteria on fresh leafy greens. CLEAR uses inexpensive light-emitting diodes to shine selected wavelengths—including invisible light—onto leaves and reads reflected light with a black-and-white camera and explainable artificial intelligence models. The system replaces costly hyperspectral imaging with off-the-shelf components. The project team will build a library of light signatures characteristic of pathogen-contaminated produce, identify the most useful light bands, train AI models, and test a working prototype. Current laboratory testing for bacterial contamination takes a day or more, allowing contaminated product to reach stores before results return; faster screening would enable processors to catch contamination earlier, prevent outbreaks, and reduce food safety costs for growers, processors, and rural communities dependent on produce sales. Place of performance is Medford, Massachusetts. Period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2029. The award is structured as a Project Grant under AFRI, the nation's competitive grants program for agricultural sciences supporting research to improve food safety, agricultural profitability, and the bioeconomy.
