Description
Despite decades of prevention efforts, rates of illness caused by salmonella, E. Coli (STEC), and norovirus have not declined as hoped – and in some cases have increased. Addressing these persistent problems requires practical, science-based solutions that work in everyday settings where food is produced, prepared, and served. The centerpiece of this effort is the 2026 in-person healthy people 2030 workgroup meeting, led by the association of food and drug officials (AFDO). This event will bring together experts from government, academia, and industry to identify resource gaps, create actionable solutions, and share them broadly. The workgroups will develop tools – such as decision aids, checklists, and training materials – designed for immediate use by food safety professionals in the field. These efforts aim to empower frontline practitioners with the resources they need to improve food safety practices and support national public health goals. This project seeks to create broader benefits, including improved coordination across sectors, increased adoption of practical tools, and stronger alignment between local practices and national food safety objectives. The ultimate goal is to reduce the burden of foodborne illness and strengthen the nation's food safety infrastructure through sustained, evidence-informed action.
