The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) awarded a $400,000 Project Grant to the San Diego Community College District, operating as San Diego Mesa College, through the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Education Grants Program (CFDA 10.223). The SEEDS Scholars: Awareness, Preparation, and Training Program provides initial steps for community college students to pursue careers in the food, agricultural, natural resources, and human sciences (FANH) fields. The program will offer experiential learning opportunities, such as informational interviews and paid internships, with USDA partners, farmers, social justice organizations, academic researchers, and garden educators. Additionally, the grant will fund mentoring and career readiness workshops to equip student participants with the necessary skills to pursue FANH careers. This four-year project aims to expose underrepresented students to potential career paths in the FANH disciplines and support their academic and professional development.
