Under the award, the University will assist FSIS in developing two separate risk assessment models for Salmonella in chicken and turkey production. The models will estimate reductions in foodborne illness attributed to controlling Salmonella...
- This $256,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Industrial Innovation, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), funds the development of a rapid, simple, and low-cost Salmonella detection and quantification test. Secure Food Solutions, Incorporated will optimize a multi-layer 96-well microplate method to demonstrate 90% sensitivity and specificity for Salmonella in raw poultry and processing environment samples within 15 hours without pre-enrichment. They...
- Grant Award Summary The University of Florida's Division of Sponsored Research received a $650,000 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective from September 15, 2025, through September 14, 2028. This three-year research initiative focuses on developing and optimizing Self-Destructing Attenuated Adjuvant Salmonella (SDAAS) strains as immunological delivery vehicles for commercial...
- Kansas State University received a $650,000 Project Grant award from the Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) program on July 15, 2025, with a completion date of July 14, 2028. The research project will investigate Salmonella contamination in ground turkey and poultry products through a three-year study conducted at the university's Manhattan, Kansas facility. The primary deliverable is detailed, science-based research data...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. received a $299,991 project grant awarded March 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) (CFDA 10.310) program, administered by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The three-year project, concluding February 28, 2029, addresses the poultry industry's critical need for tools and methodologies to comply with the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Salmonella...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $750,000 Project Grant to the University of Missouri System under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships federal grant program (CFDA 47.084) to develop rapid detection technologies and decision support systems to mitigate food supply chain threats from Salmonella contamination. The one-year project will investigate multiple transformative sensing technologies, including surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensors, impedance-based biosensors, and...
- Chapman University received a $295,703 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) (CFDA 10.310), awarded August 1, 2025, with a completion date of July 31, 2027. The grant supports a single-laboratory validation study to optimize detection procedures for Salmonella in meat analog products. The research will develop and validate improved pre-enrichment broths and rapid molecular screening methods for...
- The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) was awarded $100,000 under the Food and Drug Administration Research program (CFDA 93.103) to host its 2022 Annual Meeting from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023. NASDA will use the funding to provide information and facilitate discussions on current and emerging issues impacting agricultural feed and food safety for approximately 250-275 in-person and 300 virtual participants. Key topics will include rules under the Food...
- SR1 received a $300,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Food Safety Outreach Program (CFDA 10.328) to develop and provide customized food safety education and outreach from farm to table. The two-year award will fund SR1's Community Oriented Opportunities for Learning Food Safety from Farm to Table project, which aims to build upon existing food safety education and address the specialized needs of socially...
**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** SALMONELLAIS A MAJOR CAUSE OF FOODBORNE ILLNESS IN THE UNITED STATES WITH MANY INFECTIONS RESULTING FROM MEAT PRODUCTS.SALMONELLACONTROL HAS BEEN HINDERED BY A LACK OF CROSS-DISCIPLINARY, APPLIED RESEARCH. DUE TO AN INCREASING NEED FORSALMONELLACONTROL IN MEAT AND POULTRY PRODUCTION, THE USDA'S AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH SERVICE HAS DEVELOPED ASALMONELLAGRAND CHALLENGE (SGC) CONSISTING OF A DIVERSE GROUP OF SCIENTISTS, INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS, AND UNIVERSITY COLLABORATORS. THE GOAL OF THE SGC IS TO PROVIDE MEAT AND POULTRY PRODUCERS ACTIONABLE DATA, STANDARDIZED METHODS, AND EFFECTIVE INTERVENTION TOOLS TO REDUCESALMONELLAASSOCIATED WITH MEAT AND POULTRY PRODUCTS. DUE TO THE DIVERSE GROUP OF COLLABORATORS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS, THE SGC HAS NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND WORK IN PERSON. THEREFORE, WE ARE APPLYING TO THE FOOD SAFETY AND DEFENSE CONFERENCE GRANT TO BRING TOGETHER THE SGC AND COLLABORATORS FOR THE FIRST TIME.THE SPECIFIC GOALS OF OUR MEETING ARE FACILITATING THE SGC TO MEET IN PERSON TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS THROUGH NETWORKING; UPDATING STAKEHOLDERS AND COLLABORATORS ON RESEARCH PROGRESS THROUGH RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS; AND DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH PLANS AND GOALS FOR THE SGC USING THE VALUABLE INPUT OF STAKEHOLDERS AND COLLABORATORS DURING FEEDBACK SESSIONS. THIS CONFERENCE WILL ALLOW US TO SHARE RESEARCH AND DEVELOP COLLABORATIONS WHICH DIRECTLY ADDRESS PRIORITIES SUCH AS DEVELOPING NEW TOOLS AND METHODS FORSALMONELLARESEARCH AND DEVELOPING NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE THE PRESENCE OFSALMONELLA.
