Description

Ammonia can build up inside poultry enclosures and exceed 25 PPM safety guidelines (national institute of occupational safety and health), putting great stress on the birds impacting both their health and growth, while also creating an unsafe environment for workers.outside the poultry house, ammonia emissions have come under increased societal and regulatory scrutiny. Ammonia emissions, which can quickly solubilize and enter surface water, are suspected to be a source of nitrogen pollution in sensitive watersheds. , such as the chesapeake BAY. U.S. Broiler production is estimated to emit more than 740 million pounds of ammonia each year. With broiler production projected to grow 6.2% annually, environmental pressures related to ammonia emissions are likely to persist and grow. Additionally, ammonia is a frequent source of anxiety for neighboring residents, who cite offensive odors, health issues, allergies, and reduced property values, thereby intensifying negative public perception of the poultry industry.mova has designed a technology to capture and harvest harmful ammonia to improve environmental conditions inside the poultry house while also reducing atmospheric ammonia emissions in an economical manner. The ammonia byproduct would be harvested for reuse or sold as a marketable green fertilizer. If successful, the system promises cost-neutral ammonia capture and represents a significant departure from traditional approaches. By providing both high flock productivity and a marketable green ammonia byproduct, the system would remove the high-cost hurdle for integrators and could lead to strong industry adoption, which would be transformational for the poultry sector. This phase i sbir project will demonstrate a system that can harvest ammonia from poultry houses using a novel sorbent formulation to produce a valuable commercial byproduct and will produce a design and modelof the systems capture and economic performance during all four seasons.
