- The Agricultural Research Service awarded Purdue University a $195,810 cooperative agreement under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) from July 2021 through May 2025. The award will support research to identify sows most susceptible to producing offspring negatively impacted by in utero heat stress using functional genomics. Researchers will then evaluate the subsequent effects of in utero heat stress susceptibility on the health and behavior of pigs. By...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded Baylor University $263,314 under the Cooperative Agreement program "Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care" (CFDA 10.025) to evaluate the use of radiation-excitable nanoparticles for sterilizing insects in support of sterile insect technique (SIT). SIT aims to reduce populations of economically damaging insects by releasing sterile males to mate with wild females that then do not...
- Cooperative Agreement Summary Texas A&M Agrilife Research has received a $943,933 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), effective October 1, 2025 through March 31, 2027. The agreement funds a comprehensive feasibility and efficacy evaluation of electron beam (ebeam) technology as a non-radioactive alternative to cobalt-60 gamma...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Sacyl Pharmaceuticals, Inc. received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant of $799,998 from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), awarded on September 22, 2025, with completion targeted for September 21, 2026. The award supports the advancement of a novel, on-demand, non-hormonal male contraceptive through...
- This project grant, awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), supports fundamental neuroscience research investigating the molecular mechanisms of general anesthesia. The $334,325 award to the University of Wisconsin–Madison (September 1, 2025–August 31, 2027) funds three integrated research aims examining how general anesthetic agents suppress learning and memory through specific hippocampal...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Emery Animal Health received a $181,500 Phase I Project Grant on September 15, 2025, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 10.212). The award funds development of artificial intelligence-powered computer vision technology designed to automatically identify and classify sperm abnormalities in bull semen samples with enhanced accuracy and...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service awarded Piggs Deer Processing a $200,000 Project Grant under the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grants – Supplemental Funding program (CFDA 10.180). The grant will support Piggs Processing, a small, family-owned custom meat plant located in Hilham, TN, as it upgrades its facilities to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. - This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Drug Abuse and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), provides $2,505,537 to The Leland Stanford Junior University to develop a focused ultrasound (FUS) device for noninvasive, peripheral nerve blockade to manage acute pain. The goal is to provide an alternative to opioids and current peripheral nerve block techniques, which have significant limitations in acute pain management. The...
- The University of Missouri System received a $108,551.70 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, awarded March 15, 2026, with completion targeted for March 14, 2028. The project addresses pre-weaning piglet mortality, a critical challenge in U.S. pork production, by evaluating a precision temperature management approach that enables differentiated thermal...
SURGICAL CASTRATION OF NEWBORN PIGS IS USED TO PREVENT AGGRESSION AS THE MALE AGE DURING THE GROW-OUT PERIOD AND TO ELIMINATE BOAR TAINT, THE PUNGENT ODOR CAUSED BY ANDROSTENONE AND SKATOLE ACCUMULATION IN FAT TISSUES. THE PROCESS OF CUTTING THE SCROTUM AND PULLING OUT THE TESTES WITHOUT ANESTHESIA CAUSES PAIN AND STRESS IN PIGS AND HAS A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON EMPLOYEE MORALE, CONTRIBUTING TO AN ALREADY HIGH PERSONNEL TURNOVER ON US FARMS. REPLACING SURGICAL CASTRATION IN PIGS HAS BEEN A DIFFICULT PROBLEM FOR DECADES BECAUSE THE TECHNICAL GOALS ARE TO ELIMINATE THE PRODUCTION OF ANDROGENS AND TO CONTROL FOR UNWANTED BEHAVIORS WITHOUT REMOVING THE TESTIS AND INHIBITING ANIMAL GROWTH. FURTHERMORE, THE REPLACEMENT MUST BE COST-EFFECTIVE AND EASY TO IMPLEMENT, OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT BE ADOPTED ON THE FARMS. A SINGLE INJECTION OF INEUTER, OUR SOLUTION FOR THESE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS, HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR INHIBITING MATURATION OF THE GONADS IF GIVEN TO THE NEWBORN PIGLET. FROM THE CUSTOMER'S POINT OF VIEW, THEY CAN GAIN EMOTIONAL SATISFACTION THAT THEY ARE NOT CONSUMING PORK PRODUCED IN AN INHUMANE WAY AND THE INJECTED CHEMICALS WILL BE ELIMINATED BY THE TIME THE ANIMALS ARE SLAUGHTERED.
